Nowadays, a lot of couples are choosing to do certain wedding bits themselves, not only to ensure the overall budget remains in check, but to put a personalised stamp on their wedding days; so here are some lovely DIY ideas for your barn wedding day for your perusal!
There are so many ways to get creative. You could try your hand at making your own centrepieces for your wedding breakfast tables, your own wedding cake, invitations and save the date cards, bunting to hang from the walls of our lovely Stone Barn or your own variety of wedding favours!
Table centrepieces are certainly something that couples give a lot of thought and consideration to; wanting to make an impact for guests as they see the wedding breakfast finished set up.
If you are using fresh flowers, from either your garden or from a bucket of flowers purchased from a local ‘grow your own’ type florist, then you are likely going to spend the night before your wedding day making up the vases/arrangements.
Jam jar flower arrangements
To save that time for girly dinner and drinks with your bridesmaids, you could consider using silk flowers instead. These aren’t necessarily that cost effective, but they are looking more and more realistic and will save you time at least!
Using jam jars, empty gin or wine bottles that are spray painted with your wedding ‘colour palette’ or simply decorated with hessian/ribbon or other crafty type ideas work very well and tie in an overall scheme nicely.
If you’re having a Christmas or low season wedding, then perhaps a tall vase filled with baubles, pine cones or candy canes; you could even use pine cones as place name settings which can be sprayed painted gold, silver or white.

Ribbons hanging on chairs are a simple but effective way to enhance your wedding reception tables with a bit of colour and texture.

Stacks of books paired with vintage china add a certain charm and interest to tables and most of these items can be collected and picked up at local charity shops and car boot sales.

If you want to get creative and hands on with your wedding favours, then making these yourself is an excellent idea!
Food and drink items are what we see a lot of and these differ in all sorts of ways, from homemade jams, marmalade, hot chocolate and marshmallow kilner kits and bottles of sloe gin, to sugared almonds, truffles, chocolates and sweetie jars.
Wedding Shortbread
Flower seeds for guests to ‘sow their own’ are also a really lovely option. Saving the bees has never been more important, and ‘bee bombs’ are a brilliant idea to encourage your guests to create a wildflower area either in their own gardens, or these could just be sprinkled or a nearby verge close to their homes.
If like many, you love a bit of bunting, then, especially for a barn type wedding setting, these are a perfect way to decorate both internally and externally.
Any pretty floral or spotty type material will certainly add a shabby chic type look to the space, whilst bold colours will add a bold, statement look.

Ok, we appreciate you might not all have a sewing machine to hand, or even the know how of how to create your own bunting, but, one wonderful thing about weddings is that most of the time you’ll have a crafty Auntie or Grandma who will A) want to help you in some way and B) could be a dab hand at sewing… so, why not call on a few others to help you with your DIY ideas for your Barn Wedding

If you’re thinking about making your own wedding cake, then rest assured, you’re not alone.
You will have a lot of finalising of details in the few days running up to your wedding day, but if you have the time and inclination to include making your own wedding cake, then this is definitely a money saving option.

If you’re considering making your own, unless you’re adept in the skill of cake making, stacking and decorating, then the key is to keep it simple. Use a tried and tested recipe; now is not necessarily the time to try something new!
Our advice would be to only bake your own wedding cake if it is something you will really enjoy, otherwise, enlist the help of a favoured friend, or, you can always opt for a shop bought cake; M&S have very sweet Colin and Connie the Caterpillar wedding cakes if you want to add a touch of frivolity to the occasion!
